Four conversations recur, and they need different things from you. Getting them mixed up is what turns a manageable exchange into a complaint.

"Did a computer accuse my child?"

The hardest one, and the one where your position has to be established before the conversation rather than during it.

For a workplace-oriented comparison outside education, this comparison offers another way to look at measurement, workload, behaviour, or accountability.

If a detector score was any part of why you raised something, say so plainly and immediately. Attempting to imply the concern arose from your professional judgement alone, when it did not, will not survive one specific question, and the credibility you lose is not recoverable.

Then explain what the score does and does not mean, without minimising. Something like: the tool indicates the writing has features it associates with generated text; those features also occur in writing that is plain, formulaic, or produced by someone writing in a second language; the tool's makers do not publish how it decides, and it is not evidence I would act on by itself.

That is a strong position because it is true and because it puts you on the same side of the table as the parent. What follows is the procedure: what you actually observed, what you asked the student, what they said.

If the answer is that you acted on the score alone, the right response is to say the process was wrong, undo it, and mean it. That is a much better outcome than defending it.

"How do I know you're not just guessing?"

Fair, and it is answerable by describing your method rather than defending a conclusion.

What you looked at that was specific and checkable — a source that does not exist, content answering a question you did not set, a discontinuity within the piece. What you asked the student. What weight the technology had, which should be little or none.

Parents are generally reassured by a described method and unsettled by certainty. "Here is what I saw and here is how I checked" lands better than "I'm confident." If your method would not survive being described out loud, that is worth knowing before the meeting.

"Everyone else is using it, so isn't my child disadvantaged?"

Increasingly common, usually asked anxiously rather than aggressively, and it deserves a real answer rather than reassurance.

The honest one has two parts.

For assessed work that will be done without assistance, yes, practising with it is a disadvantage — not a moral point, a practical one. The exam is unassisted, so the practice should be too.

For everything else, the disadvantage runs the other way. The students who will do best are the ones who can tell when the output is wrong, which requires knowing the material. That skill is what we teach explicitly, and it is worth more than fluency with any particular tool.

Then say what your class rules are, so the parent can support them at home. Most parents want to help and do not know what "helping" is allowed to mean any more. A one-page policy answers that question for them too.

"Why is the school using this stuff at all?"

Sometimes hostile, more often genuinely worried.

Separate two things, because parents rarely do and neither do schools. What teachers use it for — preparation, first drafts of feedback, levelling texts — is administrative and does not involve the child interacting with anything. What students use it for is a different question with different rules.

Be honest about the evidence: the teacher-side time saving is reasonably well supported and modest, and the student-side learning claims are much thinner. A parent who is told the school is being careful and evidence-led, with specifics, is usually satisfied. A parent who is given marketing language becomes more worried, correctly.

And be straight about data: what does and does not leave the classroom is a legitimate question and one of the few where a parent has a formal right to an answer.

Three things to avoid

Do not say the tools are unreliable and also rely on one. Parents notice.

Do not describe a policy the school does not have. If there is no written rule, say there is not one yet and tell them what you do in your classroom.

Do not agree that it is cheating in general. Some uses are and most are not, and collapsing that distinction makes the next conversation harder — including the one where you have to explain why their child's use was fine.

What to have ready before any of these

A one-page class policy you can send. A short written account of what you actually observed, made on the day. And a clear statement of the school's position on detection, or a clear statement that there is not one.

Ten minutes of preparation, and it changes every one of these conversations from defensive to informative.
